A Beginner’s Guide to Sewing Curtains

Reviewed by the Quantum 1 editorial team · Updated 19 September 2026

A simple pair of curtains is a satisfying sewing project, provided the measuring and cutting are done carefully. Begin with a manageable window and a stable fabric. A complicated print, very heavy cloth or deep bay can make a first attempt much harder.

Plan the finished size

Fit or select the pole or track first and decide on the heading. Record the finished width and drop using the measuring method required by that heading. Work out fabric widths, seam allowances and hem depth before cutting. If the cloth has a repeat, plan where the pattern will sit on both curtains.

Prepare and cut

Follow the fabric manufacturer’s advice about pre-treatment. Some materials shrink or distort when washed; others must only be professionally cleaned. Square up the fabric on a large, clean surface. Cut each drop to the agreed length and label it, keeping any directional pattern or pile the same way up.

Join and finish the edges

Where several widths are needed, sew neat, straight joining seams and press them as the fabric allows. Form side hems and attach the chosen lining if used. Keep the top edge level before sewing on the heading tape or constructing pleats. Follow the specific tape maker’s guidance for stitching lines and hook pockets. Do not sew over draw cords.

Finish and fit

Make the bottom hem only after confirming the heading position and finished drop. Check both panels against each other, then hang them and distribute the folds. Leave time for the fabric to settle; some curtains benefit from gentle dressing by hand. If precision is crucial, particularly for a patterned or lined pair, ask a professional maker to review the cutting plan before you begin.

Practical checklist

  • Begin with a stable, manageable fabric
  • Make a written cutting plan
  • Keep directional fabric the same way up
  • Check both panels before hemming
  • Test the finished heading on the actual hardware

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest curtain heading for a beginner?

A straightforward heading tape is generally easier than hand-formed pleats, provided its stitching and hook instructions are followed carefully.

Should I wash fabric before sewing?

Only if the supplier recommends it. Some furnishing fabrics must not be washed and may require specialist cleaning.

When should I sew the bottom hem?

After the top construction and finished drop have been checked. This reduces the risk of two panels ending at different levels.
