Accurate curtain measurements begin with the hardware, not the glass. A beautifully made pair can still look wrong if the pole is too narrow or the drop is taken from the wrong point. Decide where the curtains will hang and how they should meet the floor before ordering.
Measure the finished pole or track
For a straight pole, measure the usable length between the finials, including the area beyond the window where open curtains will stack. For a track, follow the full running length; if it bends into a bay, measure along the track rather than across the opening. If the hardware is not yet fitted, mark its planned position and measure again after installation. Extending it beyond the frame can let more daylight in when the curtains are open, but available wall space and obstructions matter.
Choose the drop you want
Decide whether the hem should clear the floor, just touch it or pool slightly. A short clearance is easier to keep clean, while a floor-touching finish needs more accurate fitting. Measure from the point specified for your heading and hardware: for example, eyelet curtains are commonly measured from the top of the pole, while pencil pleat curtains may use the top or bottom of the hook position. Suppliers differ, so confirm the measuring convention before you order.
Check more than one point
Measure from the planned heading position to the floor at the left, centre and right. Floors and ceilings are rarely perfectly level. Note skirting, radiators, window handles and doors that could interfere with the fabric. If you have an existing curtain, measure the hardware afresh rather than assuming its width is correct.
Record a simple brief
Write down the pole or track width, desired finished drop, heading style, number of panels and whether the window is recessed or in a bay. A photo of the whole wall helps a maker understand the proportions. When in doubt, confirm the measurements with the maker before fabric is cut: alterations are much harder once the headings and hems are finished.
Practical checklist
- Fit or confirm the final pole or track
- Measure the usable width, not the glass
- Take the drop at the left, centre and right
- Record the heading and desired hem position
- Photograph the complete window wall
Frequently asked questions
Should I measure before fitting the pole?
Final curtain measurements are most reliable after the pole or track is securely fitted. If that is not possible, mark the planned position and have the dimensions checked before cutting.
Do I measure the window or the curtain pole?
Measure the usable pole or track because it determines the finished curtain width. The window opening alone does not include stack-back space.
What if the floor is uneven?
Measure the drop at several points and tell the maker. They can advise which finished length will look most balanced.
