Pencil tape has a reputation as an “old-fashioned” solution, but I still use it. Especially when sewing curtains or lightweight drapes that I want to look soft and natural.
When it works best
With thin fabrics like voile or tulle, pencil pleats look light and don’t dominate the overall look. They create a classic effect that suits many interiors.
The problem arises when someone tries to use it on heavy curtains – then the effect can be unintentional.
What I look for when choosing
Not all pencil tape is the same. What matters is the quality of the strings and the stability of the tape itself. Cheaper versions can stretch or warp after washing.
That’s why I prefer to buy a reliable tape from curtainmaker.uk rather than repairing pre-made curtains.
